Day 22: how you judge intelligence
Intelligence to me is knowing at least 1 thing better than someone else (preferably, me). If you can talk and navigate me through your specialty, or at least have a passion (grounded in reason) for it, you've earned my respect as a semi-intelligent human being. Now, I'm not saying that includes all passions. Let me give an example, today I was given a petition about Jennie McCarthy. She advocates that MMR vaccine given to children causes autism. This has been debunked professionally with decades of research to back it. Not to mention, measles, mumps, and rubella are all deadly in the very children we're vaccinating for
so....
lady, get off your soapbox and find another. There are plenty I assure you. See, she has passion, but doesn't have my respect.
Now, let me give you another scenario. Someone with like a certificate, like a pharm tech (thinking Debbie, not the lady from yesterday). Debbie knows much more about medications, side effects, and dosages than just about any doctor I know. She works with them daily in all their glory. She knows and can explain something that I don't know about, but I can have a professional conversation regarding.
The same holds true for other professions, say CAD. We have that program here at school. (We also have a welding program, but I won't go there...) I know NOTHING regarding CAD, if it comes up in conversation, "Yeah, well, if you look at the dimensions of this crossbeam compared to the tensile strength...." Done. You earned my respect. I couldn't do your job with a training manual for 2nd grade level.
I guess, I believe that everyone should have a passion/trade- makes you useful, productive, and intelligent.
