I've always viewed myself as awkward and strange.  I wasn't always this way.  Through HS I felt alone, but I wasn't socially weird.  For whatever reason, that didn't happen until college- and then increased exponentially.  Sad, really.  I usually just fall back and try desperately to blend in to the background.  I guess that technically makes me 'shy' and I do tend to shy away from most social situations unless I'm either very familiar with the topic or someone asked a direct question to me with eye contact.  Otherwise, I'm more content to sit and watch others.
